An IT issue at Edinburgh's ATC meant no planes could enter or leave the airport.

Flight operations have recommenced at Scotland's primary international airport after a major technical issue at the control tower brought the international hub to a standstill.

All aircraft movements were suspended due to an systems problem that occurred at about 08:30.

Some passengers were left waiting in aircraft on the tarmac as the outage continued.

Services Recommence with Residual Impact

Officials announced at 10:40 that operations had restarted, and thanked passengers for their "patience and understanding".

That said, considerable delays are likely to persist for some time. Services bound for London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been axed, with a host of additional flights subject to postponements.

An airport representative had earlier anticipated that a significant number of movements could be affected.

"Travelers are urged to contact their airlines for the current status on their specific flights," was the consistent advice.

Root of the Disruption

The problem was traced to the full ground stop to an IT issue with its ATC service provider.

Flyers are still being urged to confirm the details of their flight before heading to the airport as residual delays are cleared.
