Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins After Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after player Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were focused as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."
Portland also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
