{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel ran across the track right in his path
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired following that moment"
