The Former President's Policies Constitute a Threat to Civilized Society.
The domestic and foreign policies โ ranging from the attempted coup in the past to current actions and statements โ undermine both national and global jurisprudence. But thatโs not all.
They endanger the very concept of civilization itself.
A ethical foundation of civilized society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the vulnerable. Without this, we could find ourselves trapped in a conflict of all against all where only the fittest could survive.
This principle is embedded of Americaโs founding documents. This is also the heart of the global system established after WWII supported by the America, emphasizing international cooperation, popular sovereignty, human rights, and the supremacy of law.
But, it is a fragile construct, easily violated by those who would exploit their power. Maintaining it necessitates that the those in charge have enough integrity to refrain from seeking immediate gains, and that society ensure they answer for their actions if they don't.
Unfettered might does not equal right. It results in instability, upheaval, and conflict.
Whenever individuals, companies, or nations that are wealthier and stronger attack and exploit those that are less so, the structure of civilization unravels. If these actions are allowed to continue, the structure collapses. Allowing it to persist, the world can plunge into chaos and war. We have seen this pattern previously.
Today, we live in a global community grown vastly more unequal. Authority and resources are increasingly centralized than ever before. This encourages the elite to leverage their position against the disadvantaged because they act with a sense of omnipotent.
The fortunes of certain billionaires is difficult to fathom. The reach of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors spans numerous countries. AI is poised to further concentrate economic and political clout to a greater degree. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is unmatched in recorded history.
Enabled by a compliant faction and a pliant supreme court, the executive office has been made into the most powerful and unaccountable agent of the state in recent memory.
Put it all together and you perceive the danger.
A direct line ties previous breaches of norms to ongoing menaces. These were founded upon the hubris of absolute power.
One observes parallel dynamics in international affairs: in wars of aggression, in expansive ambitions, and in the global depredation by industrial titans.
Yet, unfettered might does not create right. It produces instability, upheaval, and war.
History shows that frameworks designed to limit the powerful also safeguard them. Without such constraints, their insatiable demands for more power and wealth in time bring them down โ along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And threaten international catastrophe.
This kind of contempt for legal order will cast a long shadow over international stability โ and indeed civilization โ for years to come.
