Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Figure
The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
